Patricia Brenner

Patricia Benner was born in Hampton, Virginia and raised up in California where she resides now as a professor of the University of California, San Francisco. She is the director of a National Nursing Education Research Project under the auspices of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement in Teaching. She gains her first degree in nursing from Pasadena College in 1964 and continues on to work on her master, which she achieved in 1970 from the University of California, San Francisco in medical-surgical nursing. She also received her PhD in 1982 from the University of California, Berkeley in stress, coping and health.
Patricia’s main emphasis is clinical nursing and has a lot of experiences in acute medical surgical, critical care and home-healthcare. She also does a lot of research and has written many books and journals about clinical nursing such as Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical nursing Practice. This book was rewarded by the Institute for Nursing Healthcare Leadership for 20 years being used by nursing students to aid them in the preparation for practice.
As time went on she received many awards for her work. In 1985 she was initiated into the American Academy of Nurses. She also achieved the National League for Nursing’s Linda Award for leadership in education. While in 1994, Benner became an Honorary Fellow in the Royal College of Nursing, United Kingdom and one year later the Helen Nahm Research Lecture Award from the faculty at UCSE for her contributions to nursing science and research. Patricia was chosen to be the Nursing Education Study Director for the Carnegie Foundation’s Preparation for the Professions Program in 2004. She is overseeing and focusing on the role of nursing schools nationwide to make sure that their are following the procedures in preparing the nursing student to become registered nurses.
