Defining Social Psychology Brandi K. Keller PSY/400 March 20, 2013 Dr. Timothy Doty Defining Social Psychology Throughout the years each field of science and each discipline relating to psychology has had to fight to prove its point and its relevance to the field; therefore, making each field of psychology worthy of its place within the science and academic communities. One of the many behaviors observed during this trial has been the way people think, influence, and relate to others otherwise known as social psychology. Friends, family, and collogues influence each other, which can be either a positive or a negative influence. How each person thinks and relates to these influences is what determines if the influence will be a positive
Each participant received a one-page fictional story and was then tested on recall of the important points covered in the story. It turned out that there wasn’t a significant difference between the results of all three fonts. Influence of Font Styles on Memory What if the levels of recall precision aren’t only the results of personal factors and individual differences, but also due to the physical characteristics of the materials being read? Do physical characteristics of the text used in a passage influence the memory of it? Although there is already an abundance of psychological research on reading and memory, the majority of this research has been on people’s reading deficits or their depths of information processing, yet not so much on the reading material that’s presented.
Through research I have found that my ideal job with these qualities is a Psychologist. There are many different fields of Psychology, but the field that appeals to me is a Social Psychologist. These types of Psychologist examine a person or groups of people’s behavior using experimenting and researching. They also study how people deal with each other and how they deal with the world around them. Psychologists study kinds of religious, political, educational, and family groups. In addition, they may teach at Universities or work for private companies or work in the government.
Sample introductions from first-year essays (psychology) Essay title: Compare and contrast, using examples, how ‘knowing’ something has a different meaning for a psychologist compared to a member of the lay public. Introduction 1: According to the Heinemann English Dictionary, ‘knowing’ something simply means ‘to understand’. However, before actually looking at the difference between knowing something as a lay person and as a psychologist, it is paramount to establish what psychology actually is. The definitions of psychology have changed over its lifetime; nonetheless, it is considered a science which looks at part of human behaviour. Introduction 2: There are many facts in life that all people will lay claim to ‘knowing’.
Running Header: EVOLUTION OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY Evolution of Cognitive Psychology University of Phoenix PSYCH 560/Cognitive Psychology Julie Bruno, Psy.D Evolution of Cognitive Psychology Cognitive psychology consists of intense ideas and creative beliefs. From Greek philosophers such as Plato, to the laboratories of functionalists like William James, to the behaviorists like Psychologist John B.Watson and finally to the modern science studied today has enabled many professionals to understand the complexities of the human mind. It is a field joined by many other perspectives to provide a complete picture of how humans think, feel, and process the world. This paper will define cognition, explain the interdisciplinary perspective as it relates to cognitive psychology, describe the emergence of the sub-topic as a discipline, and assess the impact of the decline of behaviorism. Definition of Cognitive Psychology Cognition is a term referring to the mental processes involved in gaining knowledge and comprehension, including thinking, knowing, remembering, judging, and problem solving.
Two peers, Ciara Craft and Melissa Keller, were the participants in this lab. They were presented with four different types of sensory stimulus, hearing, smelling, sight, and touch. Participants would be asked and then recorded, their immediate thoughts were after each form of stimuli. For hearing, a planner was dropped on the ground. Ciara’s response to the sound was that it made her think of gun shots, while Melissa’s immediate thought was the sound of a stage slap.
Some could be bad or some could be good. People could have the same personality due to gene. Face reading, palm reading and action reading are all the basic studied that all the psychologists have to learn. These are the basic art of nature to learn. The psychologists observe and simplify what they see.
According to the article, psychotherapy and counseling are terms that are often used interchangeable. It states that even being so similar, there are some elusive differences as well. Technically speaking, a counselor is an advisor working along with another person to solve a problem. The differences or similarities are based on the history of each specialty, and the focus and emphasis of the training they receive. It states that both counseling and clinical psychologists are trained to provide counseling and psychotherapy.
Social psychologists have developed the definition of social psychology by many years of scientific research. Social psychology is a mixture of many sciences. “Sometimes the context lies in the traditions of academic psychology, often in sociology or anthropology, sometimes in philosophy or theology, occasionally in history or in economics, frequently in the political life of our day.” (Cherry, 1995) Social psychology is a scientific study of human behavior with social influence, biological and other sciences may be pursued to accumulate correct data when forming social theories. Social psychologists study groups, such as work, religious, cultural and other organized groups to determine how the group may influence members as individuals. Humans usually choose the group to which they would like to belong based on personal comfort levels.
The relevance of personality types in psychotherapy Our client’s personality types are of extreme importance in therapy. The therapist will continually assess and re-assess the clients personality type, this will enable the therapist to use various techniques which are most suited to the client. This will aide and enhance the clients experience as the therapist will be able to balance their needs. Everybody will show signs of all of the following personality types, however some are stronger than others, and can be distorted. Through therapy we can learn to balance this out and to develop the other qualities which are not so obvious.
