The analogy “Water is to fish as culture is to people” exemplifies the diversity in schools today. A fish needs water which provides oxygen, safety, their home, and where they have “grown up.” People need culture because it provides them with experiences, knowledge, and acceptance of others. Water and culture are a must have for both living organisms. In order for someone to experience diversity they should surround themselves with different cultures and learn more about them. Depending on where someone lives it changes where they go to school. Where they go to school; college, high school, elementary school or even preschool is all affected in the way people live their lives and how they look at different cultures. Like water where there are many different types of fish all living in the same environment, people live in a world where there are many different religions, clothing, and food. For the majority of people going to elementary, middle school, or high school they do not get to decide which school they attend, usually it is a school within their district. Attending a school where the majority of the population is all one race does not give the student the opportunity to embrace different cultures. In the article, “Ethnically Diverse Schools Are Better” it states that, “Diversity benefits everyone; in fact it is critical in contemporary America” (Tarko 1). This quote shows how in schools today diversity is important to experience in order to accept people for their differences. People who attend a school where most people are of the same race do not get to learn about other cultures in the same way as those people who go to a diverse school. It is important for people to have an understanding of what other families may celebrate, eat, wear, or traditions they may have. By experiencing it in school people can take that knowledge out into the real world. When learning about culture in school through textbooks or notes it is harder to grasp what the culture is...
