Watching Sci-Fi's Stargate Atlantis is a favorite past-time of my family. I admit that I enjoy “sitting glued” to the TV as mum often laments. I often watch my favorite Stargate Atlantis episode while sitting on the edge of my chair. My mum doesn’t complain, in fact, she often sits with me to watch the heart throbbing episode: Thirty-Eight Minutes.
Major John Sheppard leads the Stargate Atlantis Expedition team that includes Dr. Rodney McKay, Athosian Teyla Emmagan, Lieutenant Aiden Ford, and two other personnel, Sergeant's Markham and Stackhouse back to the vampirous Wraith homeworld to gain reconnaissance on the species; however, they soon learn that the stronghold was actually a massive ship that has now taken off and left a gargantuan crater in its place. On their return to the Puddle Jumper One, they are attacked by three Wraith warriors. As they hastily retreat, Sheppard becomes caught in a sticky, spider-like web, where the large, black scorpion-like creature attaches itself to him and starts sucking on his neck like a leech. This insectoid is about two feet in length, including the tail, wrapped down under his armpit. It's got two sharp, spiny thorns stuck in the major’s neck near his carotid artery, while its forelegs are wrapped around the major's throat.
In an effort to return to Atlantis as quickly as possible and get Sheppard into the hands of a medical doctor, the pilot approaches the stargate in orbit around the planet at an astronomical velocity. But the jumper’s thruster pods, which were damaged by the Wraith as the craft lifted off, do not retract in time. The vehicle becomes lodged in the stargate, with half of it demolecularized and half of it still outside the gate in space. McKay explains this by saying, “It’s a square peg, round hole.” McKay also points out that they only have thirty-eight minutes before the wormhole shuts down and those remaining in the back of the jumper are exposed to the vacuum of space.
