The Essay

A remarkable musical of the 20th century was Sweet Charity. In this essay I will be analyzing the theatrical background of the musical. This essay will consist of the plot, main characters and background information of some of the people who helped to make this musical possible. I will also be giving a review of the musical talking about what I liked and whether I would recommend this musical for others to watch.

Sweet Charity played for 608 performances on Broadway at the Palace Theatre starring Gwen Verdon, John McMartin, Helen Gallagher and Thelma Oliver. It played for 476 performances in London at the Prince of Wales Theatre. It was revived on Broadway in 1986 and played for 369 performances at the Minskoff Theatre starring Debbie Allen, Michael Rupert, Bebe Neuwirth and Allison Williams. In 2005, the show was revived again at the Al Hirshfeld Theatre starring Christina Applegate, Denis O'Hare, Ernie Sabella and Paul Schoeffler.

Sweet charity is a musical with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy and book by Neil Simon. Bob Fosse directed and choreographed the musical for Broadway; it starred his wife and muse Gwen Verdon. The musical was based on Federico Fellini’s screen play for Nights of Cabiria . Sweet Charity had 10 productions; the first one on 1996 in Broadway. The last production took place on 2009 in the West End, the last production was scheduled to take place in 2011 in Toronto, and however, it was cancelled.
