When one looks into our history, the word ''War'' may come up very often. It can be described as an armed conflict between two or more nations over certain political or religious issues. Most of the time such conflicts solve nothing, but only are suppressed and may arise later on in history. Thus, much of war's effects are negative with very few solutions. War not only effects the soldiers who fight it, but everyone, even the civilians who are remotely unaware may suffer financially due to the increased taxes of a country in war.
In battle, soldiers are trained to not give any thought on their enemy, but sometimes a soldier can give in to the mental stress caused by constant combat and begin to lose their moral identity. Most cases, combat anxiety causes a soldier to begin to question their objectives from an ethical standpoint. A soldier can also regret their actions later on in life after realizing the value of a human life. For example in Liam O'Flaherty's "The Sniper," a Republican sniper engages with a Free-State sniper, "The sniper looked at his enemy falling and he shuddered. The lust of battle died in him. Weakened by his wound and the long summer day of fasting and watching on the roof, he revolted from the sight of the shattered mass of his dead enemy. His teeth chattered, he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody." The quote above shows that the sniper realizes his actions and finally looks at his opponent as a fellow human instead of an obstacle. One can also see how the sudden stress effected his moral standpoint.
Civilians are also effected by war, not only financially, but also emotionally and socially.
Prejudices may arise with someone of the same cultural background as the opposing country.
In John Okada's "No-No Boy," it describes various reactions among civilians who heard about the Japanese...
