A long time ago before I was born, a play which preceded it’s time was published, A Dolls House. The play deals with women becoming more independent. In the early 1900’s and prior women were treated as property. They were told what to do, wear, say and how to act. That has got to be the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my life. Freedom is something that comes in hand with being an American citizen and women fall under this category.

Elsie Mendes my mother’s grandmother, is an example of how women were still treated as pets even after they received the right to vote. Elsie was a simple woman, not highly educated, who married early. She became what we call a “House Wife”. Elsie was not allowed to work she was to stay at home and take care of the children including my grandmother, Gereldine. The sad part about it was no one saw anything wrong with that.

My Grandmother (Elise’s daughter) also decided to marry early on in her life, but only one thing was different my grandmother decided she wanted to work. My grandmother was a smart person, she knew how to work and take care of her children as well. She worked as a teller in a bank during the day but was home at night to cook and clean and get the children ready for school the next day.

These women were different because Elsie did not know what freedom was whereas my grandmother learned her rights and abilities and used them.

Now we get to my mother. My mother is like Nora; she had a lot to do with feminism. On my mothers first day of school at P.V. she broke the sexual discriminatory dress code. Girls were only allowed to wear skirts and dresses, but not my mother she wanted to wear pants. That started a commotion and the school ended up changing the rules because it was the dawn of a new era. An era where women realized their rights and freedoms and began to equilibrate themselves.
