My overall experience of this placement was overwhelmingly positive. From day one I was made feel welcome and part of the team. Everyone was friendly and openly communicated with me despite having their own work to do. My Mentor took time to introduce me to the team individually and explain their roles. She spent time with me to discuss my learning objectives for the placement and set me realistic tasks that would enhance my learning experience. She was open to me presenting my research to her in a style that suited my learning style which I found very considerate. There was a sound learning environment with consideration, empathy and support given to my preferred learning style. Provision was made for me to spend time with different members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure I received the optimum opportunity to see all sides for the work being done there. I now have a better understanding of the benefits of advance care planning and how when approached sensitively it can offer seamless care. I believe it also benefits greatly the family left behind and ensures an overall holistic approach is taken to a person’s individual care. Learning about DNAR and PPC have given end of life care a new dynamic for me that I feel I can take forward. This placement has also shown me the advantages for patients at the end of life stage to be placed on the care register. It assists with documenting and monitoring patient’s wishes while allows access to various teams who can view current information about patient choices and care arrangements in order to support existing care plans and avoid unnecessary admissions to hospital. For my personal development I wanted my end of life placement to help me address the taboo that surrounds our society in relation to death, and hopefully make me a better Nurse.
