Three Branches of Government Civics Project:
PART ONE: Fill in basic information on the following charts for each of the three branches of government. Use the following websites to gather basic information:
Online newspapers
Online magazines
www.house.gov
www.senate.gov
http://www.whitehouse.gov/
http://www.supremecourtsus.gov
PART TWO: After you find the basic information for each branch, find (or draw) pictures that symbolize three powers that the branch has. For example,
Power: Executive- President is Commander –in-Chief of the Armed Forces
Power: Legislative –Congress
Coin money
Power: Judicial-Supreme Court rules on all cases that involve the Constitution
SUGGESTION: Place your images, drawings or pictures on poster board or construction paper with a label for the branch of government it represents. Write a caption for each image.
PART THREE: Finally, find examples of the Branch “in action” today. Provide one example for each branch of people using the powers the Constitution gave to them. Be sure to write these examples in your own words. You will be able to find many examples for some powers, and none for others. Only look for examples that have taken place since January 2009.
Start your research with the websites of Congress, the White House, and the phrase “Supreme Court case” or similar terms in Google. Also use the website www.news.google.com and click on “U.S.” under “Top Stories” in the left-hand margin. BE SURE to copy the web address for each example.
