Beauty is in the Eye of the Media In this day and age, there are many influences that take over the mind of a developing youngster, but there is one in particular that shape our children without our control and without our consent: the media. As one has seen numerous times before, there are many people that acknowledge the importance of the media in our everyday life. There are essays such as Dave Barry's Red, White and Beer and David Gate's Finding Neverland that are prime examples of the glorification of society in the press and widespread through the media. In Dave Barry's patriotic essay based around the beer commercials that are spread through all of America, Red, White and Beer, Barry fuses the relationship of beer and American patriotism into one. He uses the example of the “big burly men” drinking American made beer, as opposed to beer made in other countries and it amplifies the American spirit with the imagery of dedication and hard work under the American Flag. These commercials in the media spread the ideas of patriotism like a wildfire, thus filling the heads of American youth. The media then plays a vital role in society by keeping the citizen informed and have a sense of extreme nationalism. This is important enough because without the media some of the most historical events in history may not have ever happened because citizens would not be as informed as they should be. Also, because citizens are heavily influenced by the bandwagon effect, it is a way for candidates, politicians, and groups promoting a greater cause, to get their message out to the people. In Finding Neverland, by David Gates, there is also that connection of glorification in the media and persuasion of the people, Gates just focuses on the iconic King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
