This is useful in helping us study Americans attitudes towards organised crime and gangsters during the time of Prohibition because it portrays what a lot of people believed at the time as this was a popular magazine and hence this was the message about these types of people sent out into the public. It was also a very influential magazine and hence what they believed and what was perceived of the gang members in this magazine would have been passed down to a lot of the citizens. The Source was produced in 1930 which means it was current at the time of the Prohibition and hence very reliable. The magazine covers ‘rich and famous celebrities’ this shows that Al Capone, along with other gangsters were obviously very well-known and people obviously had a lot of interest in them. This source is very useful as shows many people’s views and is current in that time period – no hindsight.
Receiving a vaccine trains your body to fight off a disease. Similarly, training America’s youth to handle difficult situations can prevent future problematic situations. The second part of Benjamin Franklin’s quote says, “Wise and good men are in my opinion, the strength of the state; more so than riches or arms.” This quote references the quality of men that are in a country, and how a single man can make a greater difference than any amount of riches or arms. Riches and arms are only temporary things, but a good man has a more lasting impact. One of the greatest examples of a “good man” is Martin Luther King Jr. which is a name recognized throughout the world.
Make Love Not War While the popular anthem of Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n Roll sent shock waves across America, the message of peace and love brought light to the new civil rights movement and the devastating war in Vietnam. At the center of this revolution was the hippie. Often referred to as freaks, stoners, and lazy, dirty, bums, the hippie experienced extreme social discrimination. What most failed to realize was that hippies were actually the most influential figures of the time period. Hippies were vital to American counterculture, fueling a movement to stretch accepted values, increase environmental awareness, and open ears to a generation of new music.
What in your view was the short term significance of Martin Luther King? Martin Luther King can be considered a key individual in the Civil Rights movement because of his influence on both the public and political leaders with his powerful speeches, the most famous being his ‘I have a dream’ speech, as well as his undeniable leadership qualities. There is also the view that King became ‘the face of the movement’ as it can be debated that he was the most popular leader in the struggle for black rights which could mainly be a result of the development of media which helped present both a positive and negative image of him but ultimately allowed him to rise to fame. During the several years of the movement King had many significant successes, such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, as well as numerous sit-ins and marches that he was involved in. However, there is also the contrasting argument from historians, such as Peter Ling, that whilst Martin Luther King participated in some important events in the movement that represented the process of change, his role in the Civil Rights Movement and the amount of transformation he actually achieved could have been exaggerated greatly.
As shown above Vargas had a huge task to tackle. Under those circumstances, he worked towards pursuing his career hoping this would have a positive influence in his legalization status. It is evident that in America, many illegal immigrants may become valuable members of today's society as professional entrepreneurs, artists, writers and politicians, making great contributions to the countries success, though this make it difficult to evaluate the long term societal effects of illegal immigration. Jose Antonio Vargas projects to be one living the "American Life” under his illegal status. The fact was Vargas was as an "undocumented immigrant" living in the United States but his optimistic attitude led him to see his difficult situation as an opportunity.
Additionally, the inclusion of pictures gives visual support to the text and augments the text appropriately. Having an image of those who peopled Jackson’s life, as Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, merely increases the interest level of the facts noted. “The Jacksonian Era” begins with the Battle of New Orleans in 1812, the role that Jackson played in this battle, and the influence it played for the rest of his career. Jackson would use this military action repeatedly throughout his career to provide a public relations basis for political office. Although Jackson’s involvement in the demise of the Second National Bank is generally noted as a significant event, this book regards it with less consideration.
Rhetorical Analysis This essay is an examination of the rhetorical techniques employed in two beer advertisements out of magazines. As we all know beer advertisements generally target the male audience. Beer advertisements generally are very pathos heavy, applying to male emotions and their need for masculinity. Every advertisement is unique in that each one can apply to a different generation, social group, or class. Advertisers for beer advertisements try to make the audience feel that if they drink their product then they will be like who ever is featured in their advertisements.
The book focuses separately on the trashers, the Jerome family and the Avenger, as they unknowingly interact and come together at the stories end. The title ‘We All Fall Down’ suggest that in some part of our lives we are capable of falling down emotionally, morally or physically. Many of the leading members were reformed alcoholics preaching their woes. Soon thereafter, we find that the abstinence towards alcohol grew as more people began to change their lives around for the better. Interest in public education was also vastly growing at this time as well. The greatest educational reformer of all time, Horace Mann, believed highly in the importance of public education. According to him, it was the only way to protect democracy because it was essential to the political system.
One reason why people could have believed that he had succumbed to fascist customs is because his ego grew exponentially in office. After years of behaving in a free wheeling manner, Long began to embrace the notion that he didn’t have to follow the rules imposed by others. In Suzanne LeVert’s Huey Long: The Kingfish of Louisiana she explains that the fame and attention of the nation started to affect Huey’s ego. She quotes him saying “I am the constitution around here now.” Long started to imagine himself as a supreme leader. Some believe if it not for his assassination Huey would have tried to force his way into office again.
