“Night”
Odontophobia is the fear of teeth. Odontophobia is a huge problem in the world today. If someone is afraid of teeth will they ever brush their teeth? That is a scary thought because then other people are forced to look at yellow teeth. That person will also have bad breath making people not want to hang out with them. In the book “Night”, by Elie Wiesel, the main character Elie losses faith in God because of all the things happening at the camp.
In the beginning of the book Elie’s faith in God is absolute. There is no doubt in him that there is not a God. He even wants to learn more about God and his religion by studying the Kabbalah. When Elie asks his dad to help him study it he says no, but when he asks Moishe the Beadle to help him and he says yes. When Elie is asked why he prays he replies, “Why did I live? Why did I breathe?” (pg 4) What this means is that it is natural for him to pray. It is a part of his daily routine just like breathing. But this may also raise the question, is the only reason he believes in God because of his family? Does he only do that to get respect from his father?
After being in the camps for a year Elie really starts to challenge his faith and if there really is a god. He does have good reasons for thinking these thoughts because of what he has been through. Not only is Elie starting to lose faith but people around him are also starting to doubt God. While this was not said by Elie it was what he was thinking. “Where is merciful God? Where is He?”(pg 64) This was said while the young pipel was being hung but wouldn’t die. When Elie heard this he said in his head that God is in fact here, he is hanging here in the gallows. This is one of the lowest points in Elie’s faith in God.
