The history of Flying J and its beginnings is very extensive, with massive details.
Before we get a lot into detail, just a few things are needed to be addressed. First of all Jay Call, founder of Flying J comes from an extensive line of entrepreneurs. The Call line beginning dates back to 1687, from English pilgrims. Cyril Call came to America seven-teen years after the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock; Cyril started the line of the Call entrepreneurs (Carlisle pg 24). Secondly, the Call family history is extremely hard to trace and it is confusing, because the Calls are Mormon. Often each Mormon man married several times, and had many offspring. The history of Flying J begins with Jay’s dad, Osborn. Osborn let his son run the Maverick, a gas station in Willard, Utah.
