If you were to get on interstate-forty, you will come to exit 84. Depending on what way you were coming from, take the exit and go to your right or left and you will run into Flying J on your left. You cannot miss the Flying J logo! Pull up to the pump, get gas, come in, pay, and eat if time allows for it, then your back on the road. Getting gas is just one of the accommodations you can experience at any Flying J. The facilities amenities are endless!
Throughout this work experience, there is a lot to know and understand about this successful business called Flying J. The strategic business has everything down pat, to make such a profitable business. This paper will explore the history, background, the company. The history of Flying J and its beginnings is very extensive, with massive details.
Before we get a lot into detail, just a few things are needed to be addressed. First of all Jay Call, founder of Flying J comes from an extensive line of entrepreneurs. The Call line beginning dates back to 1687, from English pilgrims. Cyril Call came to America seven-teen years after the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock; Cyril started the line of the Call entrepreneurs (Carlisle pg 24). Secondly, the Call family history is extremely hard to trace and it is confusing, because the Calls are Mormon. Often each Mormon man married several times, and had many offspring. Most likely children would be given the first name of their parents (Carlisle pg31).
The history of Flying J begins with Jay’s dad, Osborn. Osborn let his son run the Maverick, a gas station in Willard, Utah. Jay did so well managing Maverick, that Osborn let his son put a trailer on the property to manage it full time. Jay brought in an extra eight-teen hundred dollars from just selling tire tubes.
