Case Study
In the year of 2004 a 45 year old woman named Sophie Andrews, a retired cop, was rushed to the emergency room Saturday evening, after complaining of blurred vision, severe eye pain, and nausea. She said that she had experienced these symptoms on and off for about for a few weeks. She was examined by the doctor and is told that she has glaucoma, in order to make sure Sophie is given a number of tests. The doctor also informs her that she may lose her eye sight. She is given a tonometry to measure the pressure in her eye ball, it is found that she has a pressure 22 mm HG (millimeters of mercury) which is dangerously high and showed that she was immediately at risk for glaucoma. While under the supervision of the hospital Sophie losses vision in both of her eyes. She is shocked and alarmed and the doctor is immediately bought in.
To be certain of the initial diagnosis the doctor performed two more test a visual field test and a test for optic nerve damage. The doctor determines that she has elevated intraocular pressure, areas of vision loss and damage to your optic nerve, which means now for certain he can say that she has acute angle- closure glaucoma. Due to the rapid deterioration of Sophie’s optic nerves she has lost vision in both of her eyes and now is permanently blind. This is could have been avoided if Sophie had come to the emergency room upon the first signs of trouble. Unfortunately glaucoma can not be can not be cured nor can the damage be reversed. The pressure in her eyes was stabilized after a few days and she was allowed to go home.
Sophie is also a mother of two children of the ages thirteen and sixteen with no husband she was the sole provider finical and emotionally for her kids. She has always been a strong willed person and disciplined person due to the fact that she is an ex-police officer. She is able to adapt very well in most situations with little or no problems.
