Short term goal: pt will explain the benefit of using IS.
Long term goal: pt will demonstrate proper use of IS.

|TheUse of Incentive spirometer will minimize the chance of fluid build-up in patients recovering from rib damage.

3. Proper use of the device |Assess patient pain level.
2.Position the patient comfortably and erectly as possible.
3. Auscultate patient's breath sounds before and after using the spirometer.
Teach the patient to exhale completely with the mouth, not on the spirometer mouthpiece. Have the patient seal his lips tightly around the mouthpiece, and draw the breath in as slowly and deeply as possible through the mouth, noting the highest level the meter reaches. When the patient has inhaled as much as possible, have him hold his breath for at least three seconds and then exhale normally.
Encourage patients to work hard to reach their prescribed goals as it's a critical part of their recovery.
Place device within patient’s reach.
Teach patient to repeat the exercise every hour five to ten times following each session with a deep cough.

Brett was very competent. He explained about the use of albuterol inhaler and it benefits. he found out how much the patient know about the treatment before explaining the process on how to use the inhaler . After explaining he demonstrated how to use the device step by step and when he was finished he asked if the patient have any questions....
