Today’s economy is in a downward spiral and people with visible body art are having a more difficult time finding gainful employment than people without body art. With society being as broad and diverse as it is today, one would think that a person’s body and what is on that person’s body would not be an issue. However, there are still employers and companies that will not hire someone who has visible body art or piercings where the public can see them. Is this a biased opinion against a portion of our society that see’s their body art as a freedom of expression, or is this a way for employers to legally discriminate against people they feel they aren’t able to trust because of what they place on their bodies?
According to the U.S. Department of Labor (2008), there were 3.3 million jobs available at the end of August this year. Furthermore, this percentage has decreased since September 2007 and the hire rate is essentially the lowest it has been since May 2003. With jobs being as scarce as they are, people with higher education, proper presentation, dependability and accountability are among the first chosen to gain employment. Having body art does not mean that you are not smart, articulate, dependable or trainable yet employers tend to go with the person who stands out a little less and are more conformed to what society see’s as being acceptable. Are today’s standards of society so distorted that people are willing to accept this form of discrimination rather than fight for their own beliefs?
Most companies today are on such a tight budget that they have no choice but to be meticulous about the person they want to hire to fill an open position. This person has to be multi-skilled and cross-functional as well as a team player, focused and goal oriented. Within the spectrum of corporate America, there are many rules and regulations that employees must abide by to obtain and keep their jobs. Some corporations and businesses do not...
