Among the many discussions dancing on the tips of many American tongues, health care and the discrepancies related to its system remains to be one of the most crucial. A lot of people may argue that “the economy” is of the utmost importance, but I argue that health care is part of the economic problem and in fact, challenge the public to see that “the economy” is a general term to describe the study of supply and demand related to several sections within our economic system. Health care is reeling whether people like to admit it or not, and I for one can attest to this first hand. Our government, for years has boasted the best health care system in the world, but I strongly disagree with at least one supporting thought; we have the best treatments for health issues in the world, but at a marginal cost to the public, and directly in the hands of greedy corporations.
To begin with, not to completely discredit the system, I find the blame at least partially in those who take advantage of the system to live surprisingly more reckless and ignorant lives. For instance, there is a notion that one “area of inefficiency with health care insurance in particular comes in the form of moral hazard. People who have insurance consume more health care.” (Guell, p. 228) The general idea is given that someone who is covered is more likely to live his or her life as if he or she is a little more invincible because there is now a crutch to fall back on. This results in a devastating blow to the supply and demand curves for a given insured good. To further exemplify this point, I shall present the hypothetical concept of the creation of an AIDS vaccine. Should there ever be such a find, which current research suggests that we are ever closer to accomplishing, people are more likely to engage in risky activities because they know they are not in immediate “danger” any longer; ergo, the moral hazard would be established.
