Lawrence of Arabia
Due to the fact that I could only view the second half of “Lawrence of Arabia” I went ahead and rented it so I could watch the beginning. I knew that writing a somewhat decent review on only half of a rather long and complicated movie would be difficult. And also because my dad said it was worth watching for viewing pleasure.
The movie Lawrence of Arabia, directed by David Lean, was basically a biography of T.E. Lawrence, a British Officer who united the desert tribes of Arabia against the Turks in World War I. The film begins in 1935, with Lawrence's death as a result of a motorcycle accident, followed by his funeral. I guess this was staged because it then shifts back more than 20 years to Cairo, where Lawrence is about to begin the greatest adventure of his career. Lawrence (played by Peter O’Toole) who has a desk job in Cairo is willing to go to the desert and get to work. He teams up with a native guide, and starts learning how to ride a camel on his way to the desert, where he has to find Prince Feisel. The reason he is going into the desert is to keep the Turks from gaining control over the Suez Canal. On his mission through the dessert, Lawrence experiences a few setbacks, and with only compass and common sense he reaches the place where Colonel Brighton is. With no hesitation, Lawrence presents his opinions to Prince Feisel, even though Brighton reminds him to remember his loyalties. Lawrence’s desire to be extraordinary and his ego had led him to team up with Sherif Ali, and to head to the Turkish held port of Aquaba. After many battles Lawrence is forced to end his attempt to create an Arab state. After the terrifying torture by the Turk, Bey, he abandons fighting and attempts to lead an ordinary life. Lawrence is urged to go back and fight in Damascus, and when he does get an army together finds out that Arab tribes only unite for pride and money, rather than for history.
I thought the setting of this movie...
