Edgar Allen Poe was one of the best, most well known short story authors and poets of his time. His writings capture me in many mysterious ways. His difficult childhood and obstructions in his life left me amazed on how he pursued his writing career, and made him a professional at what he does best, fictional writing.
Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1809. He had an older brother and a younger sister. After his parents death he was taking in by the Allen family as a foster child, but never was officially adopted. When Jhon Allen’s uncle died he left an inheritance of about $750,000. With this wealth Jhon bought a two-story brick house. Later Poe attended university and started gaining gambling debts. Poe claimed that his father didn’t send him enough money. Jhon sent more money to Poe but his debts kept on increasing. Poe stopped going to the university after only one year. Since Poe couldn’t support himself anymore he enlisted in the army. He became the highest rank for a noncommissioned officer. After his early discharge his foster mother had passed away.
Poe was mostly known for his tales of macabre and mystery. In my opinion he would write to release his feelings of his life and show how he felt. His tale “The Cask of Amontillado”, the one I first read, leaves the reader thinking on some things. The reason of the murder that the protagonist does is unclear and not mentioned, and the fact that the guy that was killed was so drunk he didn’t even notice the difference between the two wines that he was told about. In the end of this tale the protagonist takes his friend to the catacombs in the area and chained him to the wall and left him there buried alive by immurement.
After all those losses and all those disruptions makes it a mystery to me on why Edgar Allen Poe didn’t end up in an asylum.
