FATE
“What more can I do? All I can do to help my family is to earn some money”
These words may not strike one as unusual or bold as they project the message of responsibility that everyone wants to promote, but if one heard an innocent ten year old say these it would be a little jolting to the mind, don’t you agree?
In a country like Pakistan it’s quite common to at least pass by one beggar on the road or someone sleeping by the sidewalk as daily life goes on. Through the years of going through depression, political instability and the latest economic vows many people have come to see this country as a never-ending pit of disparity. All our leaders after the great Quaid promised progress, hope and a better future but the only development I see is that more and more unnecessary wastage of money and deterioration of our already shabby economy. I ask myself that if our country is progressing then why the numbers of the poor are increasing. These beggars sure didn’t come from some other planet!
As I started talking to Ayesha I realized how blind people really are. It had only been a few days since I had started talking to the little one and I immediately felt a connection. She fascinated me beyond anyone I have met in my life and I still remember while investigating a strange humming noise coming from the other side of my garden wall. I saw this tiny girl with a sullen look on her face scrubbing pots. Thinking she had some chores to do I was about to leave when a small voice made me freeze.
“Are you Apsa Baji?”
A little dumbfounded I replied with the best Urdu I could manage to speak “yes, how did you know my name?”
“My nani works for you”
“You’re Saira apa’s granddaughter?”
“Yes I’m Aisha! Hasn’t she told you about me? She tells us so much about you”
“Of course she has, but what are you doing here? Do you work here?”
