The brains rolling cognitive functions are very complex. Because of Phineas gages accident researchers were able to look deeper into cognitive functions. Cognition is considered the act or process of knowing that includes understanding, reasoning, recollection, awareness, language functions, and perception (Waldstein & Elias, 2003). There are four main sections of the brain with these four sections to each control different functions.
Dementia with Lewy bodies is closely related to Parkinson's disease and often has some of the same symptoms, including difficulty with movement. Front temporal dementia (including Pick's disease) – In front temporal dementia, the front and side parts of the brain are damaged over time when clumps of abnormal proteins form inside nerve cells, causing them to die. At first, changes in personality and behavior may be the most obvious signs. Depending on where the damage is, the person may have difficulties with fluent speech or may forget the meaning of words or objects. 2) Memory problems are usually the most obvious symptom in people with dementia.
According to current research the part of the brain that responds when individuals are given two conflicting signals is known as the anterior cingulate. By using the stroop effect psychologists have been able to test the effects found in the cognitive due to attention fatigue. The other purpose of the stroop effect is that it shows the dominations of some parts of the brain and how functional areas are dominated.
Unlike Alzheimer’s disease, which is a specific change in the brain, dementia is more a generic term that can include many conditions and various causes. 1.2 – Describe the key functions of the brain that are affected by dementia. Answer: The key functions that are affected by dementia are: • Temporal lobe – responsible for vision, memory, language, hearing and learning. • Frontal lobe – responsible for making decisions, problem solving, control, behaviour and emotions. • Parental lobe – responsible for sensory information from the body, also where letters are formed, putting things in order and spatial awareness.
It helps the transfer of information from short term memory into long term memory. (Willingham, 2007) The brain also helps with problem solving and reasoning skills. In order for cognitive functioning in the brain to work correctly it needs to be able to transmit signals from the left hemisphere to the right hemisphere. When signals are received from the left side of the body they go to the right side of the brain and visa versa. The brain also helps coordinate movement.
Intelligence David Joo 8-5-12 BEH 225 What is the true meaning of intelligence compared to what most may think? Intelligence is the ability to learn something and adapt to different things. Some people may think that is stupid if they don’t know about certain things when that isn’t how intelligence is measured. People who have never been taught about something in some way probably don’t know about it. The real way to measure intelligence is to teach someone something and them pick it up and understand it without being taught most people won’t know much about it.

Most people are generally aware of the common medical treatments, therapies and research associated with psychiatry. There are many more theoretical and therapeutic avenues than those other than what the public is usually aware of. Each, of the four main perspectives in psychology is ultimately divided by schools that are founded on different sets of assumptions regarding causes and effects of disorders and their treatments. The main schools of thought are the psychodynamic, the behaviorist, the cognitive and the evolutionary.
Because of science one now can measure these processes and quantify them so that cognitive psychologist may use behavioral observation to measure damage, mental processes and mental states. Because of cognitive science, cognitive psychologist are able to see just what is going on within a person’s brain and make the most educated guess on how he or she should be treated because of their behavior (Van Wagner, 2009). Behavior of individuals can be observed and watched, measured and tested, and a conclusion can be made from behavior on whether or not cognitive psychology is the best treatment for the individual. Each perspective is golden, putting effort to realize the importance of each perspective with rationale and respect is how and why we think like we do. In reality, no one classroom has the same view.
