I have chosen to write my final research paper on the topic of globalization because it is an issue that will eventually alter the lives of the entire human species. In fact, it is precisely because of globalization that classes such as “Valuing Diversity” have become a necessity. I first became aware of this term in the late 1990’s. It is of no surprise that the rise in use of this word also coincided with the rise of the internet as the dominant form of communication throughout the world. With the development of the internet, a global society is truly plausible because information, communications, and ideas can circle the globe within seconds. However, the downside to this process is that traditional cultures are often destroyed in the name of ‘progress.’ Globalization is a term that brings to mind multinational corporations and international celebrities, but there are many people who view globalization as a threat to their ways of life. Thus, numerous political movements have been created throughout the world in order to combat the rise of globalization and preserve the local culture.
As a linguist in training, I am aware that globalization will be a major part of my studies because one of the most important phenomenons occurring in linguistics today is the direct result of globalization: the rapid extinction of various human languages. Over the course of my lifetime, a vast number of human languages will disappear from the face of the earth due to the undeniable benefits that major languages offer. Since language is such an important part of human culture, there are many efforts underway to save dying languages from extinction but it remains to be seen if these methods can be effective or not.
