Comparing two cultures
There are many types of cultures found in the world. Art through cultures can vary depending on its role in history and even in today’s society. Roman and Indian cultures vary tremendously in everyday life and art. Roman art is based on Greek gods were as Indian art is focused on their own different gods. These two cultures solely rely on their religions and beliefs while using art as their medium. Although Romans have many different gods, Indians have a few religions within that include Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism which is where most there art comes from.
Roman art is based completely on their religion using mainly sculptures and architecture. They mainly got their ideas from the Greeks. Their art is used in telling stories of the Gods and what they believed happened in history. The Romans believed that there was a god for every element of life. The book states, “despite their urbanity, Romans liked to portray themselves as simple country folk who had never lost their love of nature”(Stokstad, page 203). There are many instances today of Roman art that are used in everyday architecture as well as replicas found in the US. Roman art still has a big effect on today’s society and is very classic as well as modern. Roman architects relied on round arch and vault mostly. They created new forms using concrete. They contributed to western civilization with its governmental and administrative structures of art.
Art of India is rather unique. They also have many gods for different elements of life, but Buddhism really influenced the art in India from many sculptures which were made in the image of Buddha. They used theses to worship and meditate to. There architecture was mainly stupas and temples mostly monk cells. Hindu architecture is mostly temples which is where ritual functions are embedded.
