In the results of the Investigation of Adolescent behaviors they
showed that girls are more likely to report engaging in suicidal thoughts
and attempts more than boys. The girls percentages were much higher
than boys in suicide thoughts in their lifetime, in the past six months,
and in attempts.
As for the research, on the upside the researchers did pretty well,
but there were a few things that could and should have been done
differently. First of all, they randomly picked high school sophomores
and juniors. There were 53% of sophomores and 47% of juniors. They
should have either used one grade or the other or used both and
compared them. The junior class had a yeah more than the sophomore
class for suicide attempts and thoughts and depression and drinking
problems. All participants should have been the same age and grade.
The researchers did recruit from two different areas, but they didn’t
specify in comparing the two areas with the number of behavior
problems. Another serious critique for Mr. and Mrs. Windle was the sex
difference. 53% were female and 47% were male. That’s a 6%
difference of having more females than males which should have been
equal. This opted in resulting in an unfair count of to many females
being accused of more suicidal tendencies. Also racial issues were not
evened out. 98% of the students used were white and only 2% were
black. This raises questions of comparing the blacks and whites which
are more likely to have behavior suicidal, drinking, and depression
thoughts. Resulting in another question that could have been avoided.
The Windle’s should have equaled blacks and whites for the study.
