Careers in Accounting

The biggest question a college student has is what am I going to do with my degree? As an accounting major I often ask myself this question. There are so many different job opportunities that come along with an accounting degree.
One of the most basic careers that you can pursue with an accounting degree is bookkeeping. Bookkeepers work for a business to record and maintain transactions. Small businesses may only need one accountant, but larger businesses may need a separate department for accounting. Businesses will always need accountants to keep track of their transactions, and make sure they are following proper procedures.
Another job in the accounting field is internal auditing. “Internal Auditing is an independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organization's operations. It helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes” (theiia.org). Internal auditors work for the company, and they evaluate the company’s organizational governance, operations and information systems. Internal auditors offer assurance to management and the audit committee that internal controls are effective and working as intended.
Another possibility for a job in the accounting field is external auditing. External auditors work for consulting and CPA firms. External auditors are independent from the entity in which they are auditing.External auditors provide the company with an unbiased opinion based on the evidence they find during their audit. Businesses have an audit performed so that their financial statements are trustworthy. Among external auditors there are many positions. An external auditor starts as a staff member.
