In Homer`s epic poem " The Odyssey ", the main theme is the reunification

of the family, as Odysseus struggles to return home and rejoin his wife and

son. Odysseus`s longing for his home and family is what drives the story.

That is his one goal in the entire book, and that really states something about

his character.Even though all of his thoughts were turned towards his home

and family, he learned many lessons along the way. One of Odysseus`s

biggest challenges was to resist temptation. The first temptation Odysseus

and his man encountered was the Seirenes.Odysseus` travels also show us

the importance of family life. He has several adventures that stress this, but

none more than his decision to leave Calypso. Calypso is a beautiful goddess

who carries the " true appeal " of a woman, beauty. She offers him eternal life

and an end to physical suffering,immortality, youth, and her bed forever, if

only he will stay with her. But there is one thing she cannot offer him, a family.

He chooses to return home to his wife, who he has not seen in 20 years, and

a son he left as an infant. This act cements the role of family as the most

important element in this story. We are shown that all obstacles can be

overcome through the love and togetherness of a family, a concept we should

use in our lives today.

Odysseus learned a lot about himself and what he had to do to become a

better human. The adventures he goes on , I think , opens his eyes to a world

in which he thought he was invincible. One of the gratest lessons Odysseus
