Our Nation is based on The Constitution. The Constitution sets boundaries we as United States citizens must live by. Laws made by the states or the Federal Government must abide by the Constitution. As citizens of the United States we have certain rights and responsibilities. Teachers, faculty and students also have certain rights. In the past there has been controversy on how laws are interpreted for students and faculty.
The first amendment states Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or promoting the free exercise there of; or abridging the freedom of speech people peaceably to assemble; and to petition government for redress of grievances.
This means that as citizens of the U.S., we have rights to write about topics we choose. The rights of students remain the same. They have the right to write about topics they choose. As journalists students choose to write about topics they find interesting or topics they find informative.
Schools have given aspiring journalists the ability to practice their writing skills for school newspapers. The school newspapers are not considered official newspapers but merely a way of communication between the students. As a part of the curriculum principles and teacher should be able to control the information in the newspapers. The educational department has strict guidelines and these same guidelines should be implemented in the school newspapers.
Teachers and school administration have a certain responsibility to uphold the integrity of the school, its administrators and students. Allowing students the freedom of the press could potentially damage the school, administrators or students. For these reasons, teachers should have the right to decide what goes into a school newspaper because it is property of the school.
