The halls are crowded; there is a sense of panic throughout the Intensive Care Unit of Las Palmas Medical Center. The sirens are ringing of a code blue alarm going off, sending vibrations and chills through everyone’s veins. The white halls are blinding as one walks to get a better look at the patient fighting for his life. The heart monitor seems to be going haywire as the patients’ heart is slowly coming to a halt. The nurses scream “PADDLES!” and his chest jumps in the air like a bat out of hell with the electric currents streaming through his body. This is a day in the ICU.
As one watches this man struggle for his life, one can’t help but reach out and have a sense of compassion, for him to hang on, hang on for the nurses to save his life, to give him another chance. The monitor beeps, the green EKG shows his heart stabilizing as a sense of relief now rains over the unit. The atmosphere is now tranquil as another tragedy is avoided. The nurses now calmly walk back to their stations to watch over their patients. The unit is quiet you can hear the monitors beep, the nurses whisper amongst each other about the recent emergency event. The bright lights reflect off the glistening floors, as the smell of IV fluids flow into the veins of patients, and the sticky smell of latex that someone just can’t shake off their hands.
The aroma of lunch now enters the unit as the cafeteria staff slowly walk into the unit with trays of thick chocolate pudding, sticky green peas, and today’s lunch surprise that the patients secretly hate. The taste of the peas can be absorbed just from breathing when the trays pass by causing people to gag, as the plastic gunk surrounds the walls of their mouths. As one walks slowly around they hear their light footsteps, carefully stepping to avoid waking the resting patients. An eerie chill moves down their spine and their face grows pale as they see a deceased patient taken to the morgue. Their steps grow heavy as the...
