Teenagers are concerned about how they look. They want to be attractive and be able to fit in with others. Meeting society’s standards for looking good isn’t easy for anyone, especially for girls. Girls are judged by their appearance more than boys are. Physical attractiveness in females is based things like a good complexion, nice hair, and a well-shaped body. In today’s world well-shaped is defined as “thin.” As a result, many teenage girls are unhappy with their bodies.
There are three main types of eating disorders. One is anorexia nervosa when a person has a fear of getting fat and diets to the point of starvation. The second type of eating disorder is bulimia nervosa. A person eats large amounts of food and then makes themselves throw up, takes laxatives, or uses other ways to avoid gaining weight. The third is compulsive eating, or binge eating. A compulsive eater eats large quantities of food even when not physically hungry.
Anorexia is an eating disorder that focus’ more on the psychological side. Anorexia is a condition that goes beyond out-of-control dieting. A person with anorexia begins dieting to lose weight. Over time, the weight loss becomes a sign of mastery and control. The individual continues the endless cycle of restrictive eating often to a point close to starvation in order to feel a sense of control over the body. This cycle becomes an obsession and is similar to any type of drug or substance addiction.
About 95% of those affected by anorexia are female, but males can also develop this disorder. While anorexia typically begins to show more in teenagers, it is also seen in young children and adults. In the U.S. and other countries with high economic status, it is estimated that about one out of every 100 adolescent girls has the disorder.
