Revenge causes one to act blindly through anger, rather than through reason
and rational thought. It is based on the principle “eye for an eye,” but this principle
is not an intelligent one to live by. Laertes, and Hamlet were trying to avenge the
deaths of their fathers. They all acted on emotion, and this led to their downfall.
Since the heads of these two major families were murdered, the eldest son of each
family swore vengeance, and both sons died while exacting their acts of vengeance.
In the tragic play, Hamlet, written by William Shakespeare, revenge and the thirst
for vengeance, creates the tragedy.

Hamlet, wants revenge on the current King of his country, his uncle, who
killed his father, the original King, in order to take the crown and marry the Queen.
Hamlet spoke to a ghost, and the ghost stated that his father's death was in fact a
murder, by uncle Claudius. The ghost stated, "The serpent that did sting thy father's
life/ now wears his crown." (I, v, ll. 39-40). Therefore, Hamlet was astonished, and
then swore vengeance for his father's death. Hamlet then proceeded to exact
vengeance for his father by stabbing the king with the poisoned sword. "The point
envenomed too! /Then venom, to thy work/…Here, thou incestuous, murderous,
damned Dane, drink off this potion,-is thy union here?/ Follow my mother." (V, ii, ll.
311-312, 315-317). Therefore, Hamlet has exacted his revenge using the same
poison tipped sword that has doomed him as well. Hence, Hamlet kills King
Claudius, and his father's death is avenged but at the cost of poor Hamlet’s life,
causing this play to be tragic.

Moreover, when trying to avenge his father by killing his Uncle, Hamlet
accidentally kills Polonius, the father of one of his best friends, Laertes. Laertes
