Picking up trash, holding the door for someone, and saying thank you are all actions associated with good manners. Manners are an important part of maturing and being respected in this society. If these actions should be shown all the time, why are students at Spotswood High School being rewarded for doing something they should already know to do? Teenagers today are taught that good manners are only needed in the school by the BLAZE system.
The BLAZE system rewards students with free quiz grades, ice-cream, and other rewards for their kind actions. The problem is that they should be kind all the time and not just when a teacher is looking. Students should be on their best behavior all the time. The BLAZE system is teaching students the wrong fundamentals about manners. Also, students should not be looking to their schools as to how to respect others and their surroundings. This should come from their parents and from their home influences.
Growing up, my parents continually taught me to have good manners while doing certain activities. I was taught how to eat correctly, thank others for their help, and many other manners. Now, schools are held responsible for teaching children how to act when it is mainly the parents’ responsibilities. Manners will be needed in the future for job interviews and for just behaving in the real business world. Today’s students are not worried about their actions after high school. Student’s only worries are what sits right in front of them. They will learn that there is more to life than what is in high school and that good manners will not always be rewarded with ice cream and free quiz grades.
Teenagers today only worry about the BLAZE system because of the rewards they receive for showing good manners every once in awhile. Everyone should be on their best behavior all the time, not just when someone is looking. School is not the only place manners will be needed and most kids will have to learn that the...
