In the eyes of a six year old the world can be a pretty intimidating place. For me however, it was downright terrifying. Being home schooled and vaguely coming into contact with humans of my own size or stature definitely took a toll on my social skills to say the least. My parents weren’t much help when it came to easing me into a new way of life. After living my first six years as a sheltered child, without previous warning I was ripped from my world of butterflies and rainbows and thrown to the sharks. I had never been to a public restroom much less a public school. The idea terrified me, walking into class on the first day only to be greeted by a room full of unfamiliar faces staring and giggling in my general direction. Who would protect me from this kind of ruthless scrutiny? Moms weren’t allowed in first grade, I would be forced for the first time in my life to fend for myself.

I was no where near convinced, I pleaded 1with her to let me stay home but my efforts were useless when my attention was diverted to the Barbie shopping spree I was promised if I went quietly. With no other choice I gathered my backpack stocked with new crayons and folders and hopped in the car. For the duration of the ride my mom continued to rant on about recess, lunch time, and a few other pointless activities I couldn’t have cared less about. When we reached the drop off area I realized the school seemed positively gloomy. The old worn out building with dark chipped paint and high windows looked anything but inviting. I bit my lip and tried not to cry as my mom shouted have a good day and practically pushed me out of the car. From that point on I was on my own.
Once I reached my classroom it was just as I’d imagined, only worse. Instead of laughing they stared as if I was some kind of foreign creature they’d never seen before....
