She waited for me.   Forty-five minutes after I got to the hospital she slipped away.   Even though I was there, and witnessed it,   it doesn’t seem real to me.

    My mom called   late in the afternoon   March 14th, 2005. My grandma had been admitted to the hospital early that morning with chest pain. The rural hospital decided that they wouldn’t be able to provide proper treatment, so she was airlifted to a bigger hospital in Kansas City. I asked my mom if she needed me to come out, I was living in Tucson, AZ at the time.   She said no, everything was ok. The doctor was pretty confident that she was going to be alright. I begged my mom to let me come out, but she insisted that it would be a wasted trip, and since it would be on her dollar, I couldn’t really do anything about it. My grandma was supposed to have a few tests that evening and then a procedure the next morning. My mom said she would call me tomorrow when they knew more. The procedure was scheduled for 8am, and would take about an hour so. My mom said she would call me by nine the next morning.   All I could do was wait.
    The next morning, I hadn’t heard anything by 9:30 and I started calling the hospital, trying to track down my mom. They finally got my mom on the phone,she was crying.   I finally got out of her that something had happened during the procedure and that my grandma’s health was declining.   They weren’t sure how long she would last. My mom told me she was sorry for not giving me the info to book a flight the night before, and told me to get there as soon as I could. I got online, booked a flight that left about an hour an half later, packed quickly and called my husband to tell him I couldn't be there with our son that night, and that I wasn’t sure how long I would be gone. He was incredibly understanding which was rare,   even offering to take me to the airport, which I accepted. Most of the trip out there is a blur, I don’t remember but two things. One was the delays.
