Harley-Davidson Incorporated is a U.S. manufacturing company run out of its corporate headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and competes in the motorcycle industry. H-D employs about 9,000 people worldwide. The Company’s domestic production facilities are in the Milwaukee area, East Troy and Tomahawk, Wisconsin; York, Pennsylvania; and Kansas City, Missouri. Overview of the industry
Harley Davidson is, by far, the world leader in motorcycles with over five times the market capitalization and three times the revenue of its nearest industry competitor, Polaris. Considering the broad motorcycle industry, the other competitors of Harley-Davidson are BMW, Triumph Motorcycles, Ducati, Ek Chor China Motorcycle, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha. Focusing on the narrow segment of large motorcycles, an emerging competitor is Orange County Choppers, which has been made famous by the American chopper television series and sells only made-to-order motorcycles.
Harley’s vision and mission
The mission statement illustrates the H-D’s core values and culture: “Harley-Davidson, Inc. is an action-oriented, international company, a leader in its commitment to continuously improve our mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders. Harley-Davidson believes the key to success is to balance stakeholders’ interests through the empowerment of all employees to focus on value-added activities”.
