In the book “The Old Man in the Sea” by Earnest Hemingway the greatest obstacle it the book for the main character, Santiago, is the elusive catch. The catch of the greatest fish in Cuba is exactly what Santiago desires. This is more then just a fish to fisherman relationship. It is deeper, more meaningful, and powerful. When the marlin is finally killed off, not by Santiago but by sharks, Santiago himself dies. “Eat that, galanos. And make a dream you’ve killed a man.” Meaning that the relationship between Santiago and the marlin went beyond what he said. He felt the connection to the fish that could cement him into immortality in the village. He loved the fish, he felt sorry for the fish, and he needed to kill the fish. He showed all these emotions and feelings toward a fish he met once. It goes beyond what was said and into what he felt deep down, and that was love. Santiago might have well been a marlin he is so intertwined with the fish. After all is said and done the marlin and Santiago both share similar characteristics.
      Hemingway shows through Santiago that the fish has a mighty reputation and greatness just as Santiago does; because they not only connect on a deeper level to join them together but because of what they have been through. Through out the book Heming way describes Santiago as the best fisherman in his village ever to throw a pole in the baring sea. Santiago has met every great beast with an iron fist and unforgiving power. Santiago has seen the best and beaten the best with ease. Santiago being the best at what he does never wished the day of meeting his match would come. Santiago needed to prove himself fast because of his 85 day fishless spree. The marlin shares Santiago’s power and greatness and reputation on the first day of the 3 days of fight.
