The National School Boards Association estimates that more than 135,000 guns are
brought into U.S. schools each day. (NSBA, 1993) Violence in schools all over america have
come to point where students and staff no longer feel safe. On September 11, 2008 a six year old
brought a loaded gun to his first grade class in a Ferndale public school. Lucky for his class the
classmate the young boy showed the gun to alerted the teacher immediately. Ferndale police
captain said, "It was not loaded and ready to go, but the magazine did contain ammunition, it
would have been very difficult for a 6-year-old to fire the gun as the teacher found it. It probably
would have been outside of his knowledge to do so." Personally those words do not comfort me.
In today's world with all the video games and violent television shows I would not be
suprised if he knew what to do, and even if he didn't "accidents" happen. Young childern don't
necessarly understand that in real life if you shoot someone they don't come back. Some real life
examples would be Columbine, Virginia Tech., Red Lake High School shooting, and in 2000 the
six year old in Michigan who shot his classmate.
Staff personel do not even feel safe in schools anymore when it comes to giving students

consequences, because they are afarid of what the student might do. Sometimes it is even

difficult for them to keep their students safe, because they either couldn't prevent the fight or stop

one that is going on. Not only dose the staff not feel safe but the students never know who is

going to have a knife or gun today? They also never know if their teachers will be able to protect

them before it...
