The accuracy of data input is very important. If the data is not input properly using the right software, then the outcome will not be what you are looking for. For instance, printed questionnaires like SAT’s, should be input on what is called Optical Mark Readers (OMR), which are sheets of questions where the user answers the questions by filling in a circle with a pencil to designate the correct answer. This is the best way for these types of questionnaires as it keeps the answers uniform, and easy to use.
Telephone surveys will use a terminal for the data input being that the person asking the questions will usually be reading them from a monitor screen, and filling in the blanks as the questions are asked. This would be the best way for this data input because it keeps the writing all the same, as not everyone’s handwriting is legible.
Bank checks use Magnetic Ink Character Recognition or (MICR), which prints the routing and account numbers at the bottom of the checks so that when they are processed in house, it makes it much more efficient than hand writing them, and more accurate as well.
Retail tags, will use a Bar Code Reader, or a Point of Sale input device. The Bar Code Reader will allow the retail store to keep accurate inventory of the products for sale. And the POS will keep track of when the product is sold so that the merchant and the retail store have accurate information on what is in the store and what has been sold.
Long documents I believe would just use a personal computer for the data entry, as the personal computer has more capacity to store the information that would be required for the document allowing the user to save the document for future use, as well as make adjustments to that document as needed.
Convenience and quality of the output are just as important as the data input. For the hand held computer, I would use a workstation to get the best quality output, as the workstation will have...
