Is Fraternity a Community?
When someone thinks of the word college, normally a few words come to mind quickly. One word that most people remember is the noun “party.” When we think of partying, I believe the word fraternity emerges as well. Though most people have set a label on fraternities, They are still an example of a community. Webster’s Dictionary states “a group of people associated or formally organized for a common purpose, interest, or pleasure” are called a fraternity.
I believe a fraternity is as much a part of a community as any organization. In the fraternity I am a part of, Phi Delta Omega, group of brothers come together to work together on a common goal. From a fraternity, the member can learn a lot that complements the learning he receives in the classroom. In addition to encouraging good scholarship, a fraternity helps the member understand more about human relations and about themselves. The lessons learned through becoming a frat brother of Phi Delta Omega can serve a man for a lifetime.
As students make their commitment to each other to join, a fraternity provides a structure within, which this commitment can be carried out. In a fraternity, structure and discipline are very important, and that is why fraternities have lasted hundreds of years. In a fraternity there are leaders that set the tone for the mindset of the frat. Whether or not they would take studying as serious as socializing, each fraternity chooses someone to overlook everything. Important votes are taken from the entire group of students to decide positions such as president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.
Negative press and stereotypes about college fraternities’ blind many people from seeing more of the positive things it has to offer. In all communities, there are rebels that will have a bad effect on the group. They are not normally leaders but rather followers. Don’t be mistaken, the far majority of fraternity...
