Everyone has the right to benefit from both the protection and the benefits of the protection of “the moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary or artistic production of which he is the author”-Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 27. As expected, with the advancement in technology the internet is transforming the world into a global village. While these massive transformation has been good has it has made communication and transfer of information easy with most information available at the tip of one’s fingers, it has also had a negative connotation on the world today which was definitely not intended by the original creators. There are a lot of issues regarding internet/ communication usage that lead to debates and controversies and one of this major problems has been digital piracy. Digital Piracy (Copyright Infringement) according to the copyright.gov (the US government’s copyright enforcement   website) is the reproduction, distribution, performance, public display, or modification of a work without the permission of the copyright owner (U.S. Copyright Office). Copyright infringement has become an increasingly prevalent scourge in today’s society as intellectual material such as music, games, movies, shows and novels are reproduced and distributed illegally without the consent of the creator. I am an advocate of the protection of intellectual material both digitally and otherwise after having written a couple of songs and poems I would not want them to pop up somewhere on the internet without royalty being paid to me.


Around the world, people that have access to the internet can download digital content free of charge using peer to peer tools as well as file sharing websites. In most cases, this downloads infringe on the copyright rights of the creator of the material.
