On January 30th 1948, Mahatma Karamchand Gandhi headed to a peaceful afternoon prayer in New Delhi. A large crowd had gathered to hear one of the most important men in India at that time speak. Nathuron Godse, a Hindu militant, rushed passed the crowd and knelt to Gandhi’s feet to kiss them. As guards led Godse away, he pulled a gun from his pocket and fired 3 shots directly at Gandhi. Gandhi’s last words were “Hai Rama” meaning O God. Violence has killed a man devoted to peace. Gandhi had dedicated his life to peacefulness. Everywhere Gandhi went he spread ideas of harmony and defended people’s everyday human rights.
One day in the 1930’s Gandhi had decided to walk from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi. This was called the Salt March; it was part of Gandhi's Satyagraha campaign of civil disobedience towards the British rulers. The march lasted 3 weeks, and 79 men and women had accompanied him. This event connects to Hinduism because when accomplish Moksha u follow Brahman. His believers fallowed him as the disciples fallowed Jesus. The Salt March was significant in Gandhi’s life because it drew worldwide attention to the Indian Independence movement. The world and especially the British attitudes towards Indian independence changed after The Salt March. This event struck me personally because I thought it was very surprising of how many people went with him for that far and for that long.
Violence between India and the British was not stopping. So in South Africa in 1918, Gandhi had decided to fast for 14 days originally, then decided it was to long so to do it for 5 days. At the end of the 5 days the violence had not stopped so he decided not to stop fasting. This event is connected to Christianity because Jesus did something similar when he was in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.
