Is this black music? What exactly is black music? Black music is generally defined as hip – hop; hip – hop being a cultural movement and genre of music that began among urban African American and Latino youth in New York during the 1970s. Black music having influenced many people all over the world contributes to a violent society, country or nation. What is violence? Violence is the exertion of physical force so as to injure or abuse. In the text written by Caroline Turriff, she speaks about violence in black reggae music, but there are other genres of black music in which violence is the most significant factor in the lyrics such as hip - hop. Ever since the beginning of hip – hop, there has been a never ending relationship between violence and black music in which people tend to associate black music with violence because of many different reasons; in my opinion, three of the reasons being the most significant.
Firstly, black music is associated with violence through the lyrics that are fed to the public on a daily basis. The lyrics sung by black artists today are none other than abrasive, offensive and inappropriate language and phrases they use to make a statement and express themselves as shown by Ms. Turriff in the statement “A lot of songs talk about ME and MY M16 or AK47, “(Paragraph 18, “Living on the Frontline”). These lyrics that are written and sung to the public are full of negativity and stupidity, in every sense of the words.
