“How I Met My Husband”, by Alice Munro
The short story, “How I Met My Husband”, by Alice Munro, is an interesting tale of a young, inexperienced girl whose naiveté leads her through her first feelings of love and ultimately into the arms of her future husband. Alice Munro does a wonderful job using the narrator, Edie, to express the heartfelt sentiments of first love and self-realization.
The narrator in this story, Edie, is a 15 year old girl who did not have much worldly experience. Throughout this story Edie goes through many changes and learns many different life lessons. Edie had never finished high school and had instead taken a job as a hired girl. The author uses Edie as the narrator to show the fear and confusion of a growing adolescent. Her life up until coming to work for the Peebles family was very sheltered.
The first time Edie has ever seen a real plane up close is the day Chris Watters shows up in her life. Chris became the curiosity of the town once news spread that he would be taking people up for flights for a fee. Edie’s first interaction with Chris seems to slightly confuse and baffle her. Chris happens upon Edie trying on one of Mrs. Peebles’ dresses and refers to her as beautiful. Edie is unsure how to react to Chris’s compliment. This is a great example of how she is still naïve like a child to such things. She does not recognize that Chris is referring to her as men often do to women. This would be Edie’s first encounter with a man seeing her as a woman and not a child.
The character of Chris Watters could be considered flighty. Chris has been in the war and finds it difficult to settle into a regular life. He has been on the run since he left the war. He finds it more for his wandering ways to set up shop in different locations and take people up for flights. It seems that Chris cannot succumb to a staying in one place for any significant length of time. Chris hasn’t been able to adapt to a normal day...
