Society is a natural phenomenon, humans organize, collaborate with each other in order to establish a hierarchy structure, in which every part of the link chain has the opportunity to ascend or descend a notch. Like any phenomenon, it has the undeniable essence of action-reaction, so according to this, we can imply that society is a force. In time this force, depending on the way it assembles itself through the course of time, has subtle but devastating effects on those who suffer involuntarily the unjust codes delimited by its historical creators or rulers. Racism happens to be the example of such codes inherited from the founding fathers of America.
It is my intention to explain the consequences of America, using Native Son as my eyes in that particular time in American history, submerging myself as one African American living in a conditioned society, trapped in the psychological parallel world of a country that suppressed and denied the humanity of African American people.
Tragic consequences of Racism in America
The peculiarity of this novel can be attributed to two main characteristics; on one hand, the extensive and elaborated psychological background of the characters. Richard Wright takes us from the palpable, explicit problem of racism and beyond this to the core and history of it, and ultimate to how it alters African American people as a direct consequence. On the other hand, with Native Son he embodied racism and gave concrete examples of it in the United States. The main element of the novel is the involuntarily assassination of a white girl by the hands of a confused and unstable black boy; which is portrayed as a direct consequence of the negative and harmful feedback young black boys absorb from a segregated society ruled by the white. Sub themes as hate, historical guilt and the need for an identity are all direct palpable consequences of racism.
