Whether small, employing only a few employees, or potentially employing thousands, every town has businesses. Regardless of size, every business has to follow the same set of codes and laws regarding its business ethics. I believe good business ethics are essential for a company to grow and have lasting benefits for the owners, as well as the employees and the community. If a business operates in the manner the law says it should, the company grows and so does the need for new workers. In turn, the employees live in the community, bringing in more money to the local shops.
Business ethics are defined as “behavior that a business adheres to in its daily dealings with the outside world.” If a business breaks the law regarding its ethics it could be fined hundreds, even thousands of dollars. A business may believe, in theory, that breaking the law will save money, but in reality this mistake hoses money for the company. People do not want to support a business that is operating corruptly by purchasing their products. Because of a select few business leaders’ operating corruptly everyone has to suffer. These mistakes made by corrupt leaders cause many consumers to believe every business operates in a capitalistic manner, hoping to control the market, and all the money in it; when in reality most businesses are trying to help the community grow.
In an effort to promote their good ethics to the community, many companies have made progress towards changing the way they operate. Some have stopped testing their products on animals, while others now offer refunds on dangerous and defective products. I believe the most progressive tactic of businesses is offering to match a competitor’s lower price on an item. Agencies like the Better Business Bureau monitor a company’s ethics, and investigate complaints made by consumers. This helps cut down on price gouging and price fixing.
