This includes any verbal, written, telephonic, audio or video recorded information. Both ethical codes assert that the counselor and the clients should agree and set the limits of confidentiality. The counselors are also not permitted to share clients’ confidential information among themselves unless the client has given his or her consent. Both ethical codes also provide that records of the counseling proceedings should be kept in a secure location where they will not get into the wrong hands. One major contrast in the area of confidence is that; while the ACA ethical codes allow the counselor to immediately disclose client’s information on the issue of a subpoena, AACC ethical codes on the other hand provide that the counselor shall not disclose the information immediately but shall first give the client an opportunity to consult with his or her
As the client may not have ever spoken about what they are about to speak about to the counsellor before. So they are putting their whole trust, feelings and courage in telling the counsellor knowing that it will never be discussed out of the counselling session. Confidentiality should be discussed
It serves five main purposes: 1) clarifying the nature of ethical responsibilities to its members, 2) helping support the mission of the association, 3) establishing principles that define ethical behavior and best practices, 4) serves as an ethical guide to help members construct a professional course of action and 5) serves as a basis for processing ethical complaints and inquiries (American Counseling Association (ACA), 2005). However, they should be considered by counselors in arriving at a professional and ethical course of action. The Ethical Standards are set enforceable rules for conduct of counselors. Most of these standards are written so they apply to counselors that have various roles within the field. The ACA enforces members and student residents to comply with the standards of their ethics code and the procedures and rules that are used to enforce them.
This evidentiary rule protects both attorneys and their clients from being forced to disclose confidential communications between them if the communications are for the purpose of furnishing or obtaining legal advice or assistance. Although no one specifically asked for my legal opinion or advice, I am attending these confidential meetings in my capacity as ABC’s general counsel. Code of Ethics Comparison between AACC and ACA When considering similarities and differences of ethical codes one should perhaps begin by clarifying what ethics are as well as the purpose of a code of ethics. In the profession of counseling one might consider the statement from Corey, Corey, and Callanan which reads, “The primary purpose of a code of ethics is to safeguard the welfare of clients by providing what is in their best interest” (Corey et al., 2011 p.9). While this is not the only purpose a code of ethics serves, it is the one that best takes into account one important consideration in counseling which is “Do no harm" (Sossin, n.d.). “Ethics codes are also designed to safeguard the public and to guide the professionals in their work so that they can provide the best service possible” (Corey et al.,2011 p.9). The AACC or American Association of Christian Counselors is intended; as the name implies, for those counselors practicing with Christianity as their spiritual emphasis while the ACA

Similarly to this you should also be aware not to automatically assume the individual is in need of help. For example if somebody has a disability mentally or physically, don’t assume that they are incapable. You should be approachable if they need help, but not patronising to assume they are unable to carry out an activity or take on higher level tasks and responsibilities.
Counsellors can avoid this conflict by starting the counselling relationship with a contract that ensures confidentiality and helps create a safe environment that supports a client by setting down guidelines for a working/ professional relationship that includes boundaries, conduct, timekeeping. (class activity term 1) Although counsellors are not regulated by any government body, they do adhere to a code of practise from the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Regular keyworker sessions should be carried out with the individual on every aspect of there life including things that they may be finding difficult. It is important that the individual is aware that you are a member of staff who is there to support them, you need to be careful not to over step the mark. Never agree to keep secrets, never buy the individual presents and do not see the individual in your own personal time.
