Introduction :
On 8 may 1945 German army capitulated which is a strong symbol at that time. Democracy defeated National Socialist dictatorship and liberated people from industrial extermination. At the end of the war Germany is a weak country. Fires and bombing destroyed most of the biggest cities and some industrial regions. The purpose of those destructive attacks was to break industrial potential of the enemies. So a city as Cologne which had large industrial activities has been massively destroyed. When US troops entered in the City they discovered an almost No man’s land with a population of 40,000 people against 750,000 in 1939. 80% of the city was destroyed. Hamburg, Dresden or Munich suffered the same fate. 50% of German transportation system and the industrial areas were unusable. 1.86 million Homes were uninhabitable; 3.6 million were seriously damaged and 20 million Germans were homeless. Water, gas and electricity were no more set up. One year after only 8 million homes has been rebuilt and still 14 million people were homeless. Everyone had to participate to rebuild the country. Population suffered of an important misery and people had no choice to move where it was possible to find food. Liberation of concentration and work camps left 5 million people in the middle of nowhere separated from their city, their country and their family. They were walking along the roads to search their families. German soldiers back from the front are in the same situation and 11 million German soldiers were still in jail in USSR or at the west. People from East Germany had no choices to flee the USSR army that pillaged, raped, killed and destroyed everything. After 1950 the 9.6 million Germans were still separated from their living place and migrated to the west. In 1949 Germany is separated in two stats.
