Introduction
In Meditation one, Descartes claim that his senses have deceived him some times but that does not mean that he doubts his senses (Descartes 2008:1) so this brings into question his physical existence.
Descartes also puts forward the claim that by doubting his hands/body in Meditation one (Descartes 2008:1) he would be comparing himself to a madman yet in Meditation two he starts to doubt the existence of his body (Descartes 2008:1). This might seem confusing but I will be able to clarify the confusion by discussing it during this essay. (“I will discuss considering the fact that he may ‘not’ exist physically or by having a body but has senses”.)
In Meditation one, Descartes is highly confused by dreams and reality which is connected to the wax argument in Meditation two, when the possibility of the fact that he could be dreaming through the whole Meditation.
In Meditation two,
He finally comes to the conclusion of what or who “I” really is and how “I” becomes a “thinking thing”. In Meditation two, the wax argument is discussed in great detail to show how he knows himself better than he knows physical things. The main point of this Meditation is that, he exists because he thinks it, which is one of the crucial points that will be discussed in this essay.
To begin, let us consider the possibility of Descartes physical existence. In Meditation one, he claims that he trusted his senses all his life but he realized that they had deceived him at times. For example he uses sight to show that the images which he had perceived through his vision was not necessarily what was seen in reality i.e. distances and size but he also claims that although he does not trust his senses completely, he does not doubt them. (Descartes 2008:1)
In Meditation one, he does not doubt that he exists physically, that he has hands, a body, etc. (Descartes 2008:1) and claims...
