Othello is a play written by William Shakespeare between 1601 and 1608. It is one of Shakespeare’s most tragic plays because of the circumstances which lead to the main climax and how it got there. This play is like watching a train crash in slow motion, because we get to see the gradual downfall of the protagonist Othello, whose mind becomes corrupt due to the work of Iago.
Othello is very passionately driven, for him love is truly blind, because the love he possesses for Desdemona clouds his senses and his judgment. Comparisons can be made to Twelfth Night’s The Duke of Orsino, because he is also someone who loves blindly. The story of how they fell in love is like love at first sight, because in Act 1-Scene 3, Othello tells the court of how him and Desdemona fell in love, and the way he said it made it sound very powerful and magical:
Othello: I will round an unvarnished tale deliver of my whole course with love
Othello: She thanked me, and bade me, if I had a friend that loved her; I should but teach him how to tell my story and that would woo her.
‘’I did consent, and often beguile her of tears, When did speak of some distressful stroke that my youth suffered’’
So from this extract we can see that Othello’s feelings of the way they fell in love was very romantic and magical for him. Another aspect of Othello’s overpowering love towards Desdemona is the fact that he’s very over dramatic about it and his description of it is goes into epical proportions, such as talking about nature, hell and heaven. It goes to show that Othello’s language, very much like his love and himself, is strong and powerful. This can be evidenced in Act 2-Scene 1:
It gives me wonder great as my content
To see you here before me. O my soul's joy!
If after every tempest come such calms,
May the winds blow till they have waken'd death!
And let the labouring bark climb hills of seas
Olympus-high and duck again...
