I think that the service that I attended is a great example of how you can worship outside a church. The service was held on my drill weekend in a gym/cafeteria area. There weren’t any decorations, candles, or alters. It was just a couple chairs in the corner with a box of Bible’s and a portable tape player for the opening song. It wasn’t a church but we still gathered to worship the Lord.
The worship service that I decided to attend was one that was held during drill at my armory. I have attended many military services. Sometimes three per Sunday just so that I would have something to do and keep me entertained. I like going to military services because each Chaplain has a different way of preaching and slightly different views. Each service you attend is unique. Now that I am no longer active I don’t have as many opportunities to go to these services. They have them about three or four times a year if we are lucky. I always try and attend them because they are not like normal church services.
I came in a little late because I was coming from a class. When me and my classmates got into the gym/cafeteria where the service was being held there were about four other people and the Champlain singing the song “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone).” We pulled up chair and sat down and the Champlain handed us the lyrics as he sang. We finished the song with the other soldiers there. The Champlain then started his sermon by telling us a war story. He told us about a Major from Nebraska who was deployed in Afghanistan. The Major hears gun shots and next thing he knows he is on the ground. He was hit with three gunshots to the chest. Immediately the Major gets up and gets everyone out of the ambush. The interceptor body armor that he was wearing saved his life.
