As the United States of America being the most important country in the world the race to be the head of the nation is not an easy one. Our electoral process is one of the most detailed systems of election in the world. The electoral college was invented as a way to elect our president by the founding fathers of our country. Its process is like this, electors who are mainly people of a stronger political background, are chosen to meet in their own state capital and vote for the president and vice president of America. When the time comes for the people of America to vote they go to the voters booth and actually cast their ballots for the electors committed to vote for the candidate of their party not the President and Vice President. Electors of the party receiving the highest vote in each state are elected. Their votes are mailed to the president of the U.S. Senate and he reveals the final decision. The candidates have to win a majority of 270 of the 538 elector votes in order to become elected as President.

So they were the ones to come up with voting for electors and having them choose the President and Vice President. This is just a way to make sure our public is not voting with no knowledge of politics. The popular vote has only been overturned by the electoral votes four times in this countries history, 1824 1876, 1888, and now the election of 2000 is part of that.
