An Afternoon with Grandma

It was a bright and crisp spring morning with a touch of winter in the air. The sun had melted away the dew on lawns of the houses that lined a narrow street on both sides. A young woman with long light brown hair, wearing blue jeans, old sneakers, a red hooded sweat shirt and carrying a backpack broke the stillness on the deserted street. Her lone footsteps echoed through the empty street as she approached her destination. The mint green house with white trim and white bars on the windows that belonged to her grandparents was waiting for her. As the young woman approached the walkway that led up into the house, she felt a presence watching her from behind a white barred window. She could not make out who the figure was, but saw the sunlight reflect off a pair of glasses and the young woman secretly smiled to herself.
The house swallowed the young woman as she entered the small white barred gate of jagged teeth that separated the front door from the rest of the world. She rang the door bell and paused to listen. A cold chill ran down her back from the lingering winter breeze that swirled around in the courtyard. The white front door flew open, a pair of arms reached out of the darkness to pull the young woman inside the foyer while the wind pushed her from behind. In the darkness of the house, the arms enclosed around the young woman, pressing her into a large warm body. As her eyes adjusted to the dim light of the house, the young woman looked up into the face of her grandfather. He was a mountain of a man that towered over her. Her grandfather pulled a blue baseball hat over neatly combed snow white hair and pulled the keys out of his pocket as he spoke to her in his sweet tone.
“Thanks for coming over baby. I really appreciate your help with the house. Your aunt and uncle are coming into town tomorrow for the funeral this weekend. I need your great-grandma’s bedroom...
